Laser Eye Treatment Bushnell

Ram Eye Care & Retina Center has been delivering specialized laser eye treatment in Bushnell, Florida since 1997. In cases where glaucoma has progressed to a certain stage, managing the condition solely with eye drops and medications may not be feasible. Some patients might find themselves dealing with allergic reactions or unwanted side effects from these medications, and in certain instances, such treatment may fail to halt the progression of glaucoma. When this occurs, laser therapy could serve as a viable alternative.

Types of Laser Therapy

R

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

This laser therapy specifically is designed to help patients with Open-Angle Glaucoma. By stimulating or changing specific pigmented cells, it’s possible to increase drainage of the aqueous humor fluid, reducing pressure. This process is performed without damage to other tissue and has no adverse side effects or scarring. Because there are no side effects, the procedure may be repeated if necessary. The procedure itself is quick and can be done in Dr. Ram’s office. Prior to the procedure itself the patient will be administered eye drops to prepare the eye. Using a special microscope, the laser applications are administered. Patient’s should plan on an office stay of about 2 hours and prior to being released we will check the eye pressure to determine a benchmark for future exams. Following the SLT procedure it may take 4-6 weeks to see a reduction in eye pressure. Patients will be scheduled for follow up visits so that this can be measured. There may be some temporary discomfort including inflammation, conjunctivitis or minor eye pain, but patients should be able to resume all prior activities and will continue with any current glaucoma treatments. Any discomfort can be dealt with using over-the-counter medications.
R

Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (YAG PI)

This laser treatment is designed for Angle-Closure Glaucoma or Narrow-Angle Glaucoma. Its purpose is to open a passage within the drainage channels of the eye. As the laser creates a hole towards the outer edge of the iris, the narrow angle is widened which allows more aqueous humor fluid to exit. As with SLT laser treatments, YAG PI laser treatments take only a few minutes to perform. Similar to a normal eye exam, you are seated across from Dr. Ram, and the patient is administered numbing eye drops prior to treatment. Patients should plan on a 2-hour office stay and prior to leaving your eye pressure will be measured to determine a benchmark for future exams. After scheduling your follow exam appointment, the patient is free to return to their normal activities. There should be little discomfort or side effects, but some patients may experience a brief period of light sensitivity and possibly some minor eye irritation and blurry vision.

Is laser eye surgery safe?

Every medical procedure carries some degree of risk, and laser eye surgery is no exception. However, it is considered one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures available today, with a high success rate and minimal complications. Advances in laser technology and surgical techniques have made the procedure even safer over the years, offering precise and predictable results.

That said, not every patient is an ideal candidate for laser eye surgery. Factors such as corneal thickness, eye health, prescription stability, and certain medical conditions can affect eligibility. A comprehensive pre-operative evaluation is essential to determine whether laser surgery is suitable for each individual. For those who are good candidates, the vast majority experience excellent outcomes with improved vision and a low risk of complications.
