A healthy retina is required for good vision. The function of the retina is to translate images seen and transmit them to the brain for visual identification. High sugar levels can impact your retina causing vision loss or blindness. Early detection and preventative steps are critical, as this disease is not curable.
How rare is diabetic retinopathy?
For people with type 1 diabetes, in the first 3 to 5 years after developing the disease, vision threatening retinopathy is rare. During the next 15 to 20 years it’s almost certain that type 1 diabetic patients will develop retinopathy.
